MILLIONS
of food products have been recalled from supermarket shelves over concerns
that they may be contaminated with an illegal dye that causes cancer. The
Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned people on 18 February 2005 not to eat
any of the published 359 brands containing chilli powder coloured with the
Sudan I dye, ranging from sandwiches and pizzas to pies, soups and sauces. Sudan
I, a red synthetic chemical dye usually used in solvents, oils, waxes and
shoe polish, is banned throughout the world because it has been shown to
cause cancer in mice and in tests on human liver cells. It is usually used
in solvents, oils, waxes and shoe polish. The alarm was first raised on January
28 2005 when an Italian company contacted Premier Foods, one of the
country’s leading food manufacturers, and told it that a batch of Crosse
& Blackwell Worcester Sauce exported by the company showed traces of
the banned dye. Premier traced every ingredient and discovered the suspect
red chilli powder, part of a five-tonne consignment imported from India in
2002. The spice has been used in brands of Worcester Sauce, both sold on
the high street and used by food manufacturers and caterers.
The FSA said that Sudan I had long been
banned in foods within the 25 EU countries, while Sudan I had
been shown to carry an increased risk of cancer, the levels in the
affected foods were very low. “It is sensible to avoid eating any more
(of these products) but there is no risk of immediate ill health,” |
