The rules mean that if you travel to any country outside the European Union, it is illegal to bring meat and milk-based products for your personal use back into the UK. You should be aware that there are also limits on bringing back other food items, including fish, shellfish, honey, eggs and certain types of fruit and vegetables. The limits will depend on the country you are traveling from. The same rules apply if you are bringing these food items into the UK yourself, if a friend or a relative is bringing them as a gift, or if they are sent in the post. If the item is banned, or is in an amount greater than is allowed, it will be seized and destroyed. If you do bring food items into the UK and are unsure whether they are allowed, to avoid any penalties go to the HM Customs Red Channel, (Something to Declare) or Red Point, and speak to a Customs officer. If you have items that are not allowed, they will be taken away and destroyed, and no further action will be taken. If you fail to declare any items that are not permitted then you are breaking the law and can face prosecution, fines and imprisonment.
